Looking forward … SE Asian scripts support
June 8th, 2007 by Andrew CunninghamA number of changes to the Myanmar script and proposed support for additional South east Asian support are in the ISO/IEC 10646 and Unicode pipelines over the next year or two.
Andrew West provides a very good summary of what will be in Unicode 5.1 in his post What’s new in Unicode 5.1 ?.
The following documents outline proposed additions to the ISO/IEC 10646 and Unicode repertoires:
- N3263: Summary of repertoire for FDAM 3 of ISO/IEC 10646
- N3264: Summary of repertoire for FPDAM 4 of ISO/IEC 10646
- N3265: Summary of repertoire for PDAM 5 of ISO/IEC 10646
FDAM 3
These additions should be included in Unicode 5.1. The following scripts are included:
- Myanmar. This includes additional characters for Mon and S’gaw Karen: N3044, N3043, N3115
- Kayah Li: N3038
- Rejang: N3096
FPDAM 4
The following scripts are included:
- Myanmar. Supports additional characters for Western Pwo Karen, Eastern Pwo Karen, Geba Karen, Kayah, Shan and Rumai Palaung: N3142, N3143
- Lanna: N3121R, N3207R
- Cham: N3120
PDAM 5
A proposal for Tai (Tay) Viet is under development for inclusion. Latest version is N3220. SIL International have a number of documents discussing the Tai Viet script.
